給水制限がかかる夏の関東。 盆踊りの太鼓の練習の夜、公平は亡き祖父・有太郎に叱られ、脅かされる夢を見た。 翌日、有太郎に瓜二つの弟・繁三郎が現れて仰天する。 裕子は沢渡からブラウスをプレゼントされ喜ぶが、同伴喫茶に入るのを拒み、家に帰った後も悩む。 その夜、公平はタライの水がないことを有三に問い詰められ、水鉄砲遊びで使ったと白状する。 ヨシに馬鹿にされた公平は、ヨシに「どっか行っちゃえ」と言ってしまう。 その後、公平は繁三郎からヨシが戦争で水に対する辛い思い出があると聞かされる。 翌日、ヨシがいなくなり、公平は昨日の発言を思い返し青ざめる。 家族が警察に届けるか考え始めた頃、ヨシが帰宅。公平は泣いて謝る。 ヨシは有太郎の墓参りのため、深川まで水を分けてもらってきたのだった。 盆踊り当日、雨は降ったが、水不足が解消される嬉しいものにもなった。
