小铃嫁到周作家已经好几天了。建在山上的北条家没有自来水，去公共水井打水成为小铃每天必做的功课。邻居刈谷泷教给小铃该如何做。小铃与周围的邻居们渐渐熟悉起来。这些人中阿泷的女儿幸子和堂本志野与小铃是同龄人，她们和小铃很谈得来。这时的小铃才感到自己真的出嫁了。但是，小铃也有烦恼。她虽然想向婆婆阿杉学习北条家的种种惯例，但是顾及婆婆足部有疾病，不好开问询问。另一方面，阿杉也不敢对小铃做的家务发表意见。这种状态让小铃压力很大。就在这时，径子带女儿晴美回娘家住。她与婆家黑村家的关系很差，暂时不会回去。径子说自己会照料北条家的家事，让小铃回娘家去。周作反对，但是阿杉和元太郎都赞成径子的意见。结果，小铃刚出嫁一个月就回了娘家。
