2002年，北京。以拍DV为业的日本姑娘青山小百合无意间闯入一座四合院，结识了中国青年萧忆。萧忆的爷爷萧汉生由此回忆起60年前，那个对现在年轻人极其陌生的残酷的故事。1944年的一个狂风暴雨之夜，一艘日本货船底舱挤满了被抓来的国民党战俘、八路军，及一些普通中国百姓。在战俘中有军衔最高的国民党上校团长周尚文和八路军连长萧汉生，还有曾经是特工的夏明远。货船进入日本横滨港，战俘们惊愕地发现已身处日本。 在开往仓津岛的闷罐军车上，战俘和劳工们拥挤在车厢内。虚弱、重伤的劳工和战俘不断地死去，堆积的尸体和活人挤在一起，没有水、没有粮食，离开了祖国的恐惧，笼罩着所有的人。
