金田一耕助（古谷一行饰）前往瀬户内海的狱门岛，是为了送好友本鬼头千万太（安藤一人饰）的遗骸回故乡。他受到了本鬼头家的女主人早苗（秋吉久美子饰）、该家的监护人千光寺住持了然（名古屋章饰）、村医村濑幸庵（织本顺吉饰）和村长荒木真喜平（北村总一朗）的欢迎，金田一参加了追思会。 当晚，本鬼头千万太的私生女姐妹中的三女花子（木内美穗饰）被发现被杀，尸首异处地倒挂在一棵梅树上。金田一脑海中浮现千万太临终前的话：“赶快回到狱门岛，否则妹妹们会被杀。”几天后，次女雪枝（泽木兰野饰）被发现遭到勒毙，尸体被放进了一个钟楼的钟内。金田一抵达岛上后，接连发生的杀人案件，引起了他的警觉。为了解开这一连串古怪的连续杀人之谜，金田一从狱门岛复杂的人际关系入手开始调查。
