潘被杂志社老板老杜辞退，大怒，老杜旋即被杀，潘成了疑犯。麦律师与阿中找潘调查，潘坚称没有杀人，并忆述当晚曾到老杜办公室，欲与他商谈，但发现他已遇害。 麦律师与阿中亦不相信潘杀人，遂找了杂志社职员及老杜舅仔调查，但他们均无可疑，后来麦律师见老杜遇害后的桌面上，有潘的稿件，几可确定潘与凶案有关。原来潘始终不忿老杜不刊登他的稿，面对老杜的奚落，潘怒不可遏，与老杜纠缠起来，并错手将老杜杀害。
