关键时刻，幸亏女扮男装的嫦娥出现，才使得八戒脱险。八戒并没没有认出嫦娥，而嫦娥也不想现在就和猪身的天篷相认。 见到西王母后，八戒成功地通过了“真心炉”的考验，讨到了唯一一颗变形药，但却被由于药效过期，结果没能变回天篷元帅。西王母告知八戒现在只有学好本事，护送唐僧上西天取经后才能再问佛祖讨药，嫦娥鼓励八戒先回去学好本事，自己也决定留下暗中帮助他。 八戒、嫦娥和福迪在回福陵山的途中，路过高老庄，却被高原外错当成强盗和妖怪，原来是牛魔王手下的强盗要来抢高原外的女儿玉兰回去献给牛魔王做压寨夫人，仗义的八戒决定拔刀相助。
