北宋初年，太祖赵匡胤驾崩之后，其弟赵匡义继位，改名赵光义，史称宋太宗。太宗一心收复燕云十六州，先后两次御驾亲征，身负箭伤无功而返。汴京皇宫内，太宗心急如焚，箭伤发作，深感时日无多。太宗与宰相赵普商议立储一事，欲将三皇子元侃立为储君，此事引来太宗的弟弟、秦王赵廷美的不满，因为按照“兄终弟及”，应由秦王继位。 几番思虑，太宗与赵普最终商定，先诞下皇孙者，可即位为王。
