这是NHK的第54部大河剧。距今约一百六十年前，如今的山口县·荻市内有一间小私塾， 许多出身不同的有志之士皆在此学习，这间私塾名为「松下村塾」。私塾里的这些不为人知的年轻人，日后将推动一场被称为「明治维新」的巨大变革，而被这些年轻人尊称为老师之人，正是山鹿流兵学老师·吉田松阴（伊势谷友介 饰）。一个家族深爱着松阴，默默支持着松阴，众人虽未留名于历史，但生命亦在平凡的生活中代代延续，每个人都活出了自己的精彩人生，并且，有一名女性扶持了众多年轻人。这是吉田松阴之妹·阿文（井上真央 饰）以及其家人与同伴一同走过的动荡时代中上演的故事。
