故事开始于新中国热火朝天的1956年，年轻漂亮的小学数学老师文丽（蒋雯丽饰）和重型机械厂的青年标兵技术员佟志（张国立饰）结为夫妻。年轻时，他们是一对欢喜冤家，他们从性格到生活习惯格格不入，又早早为人父母，为了要儿子一连生了四个孩子。婚姻生活中从衣食住行到子女教育到婆媳关系再到性关系，处处矛盾。中年时，他们进入了婚姻疲惫期，夫妻之间越来越少沟通，经常陷入更危险的冷战之中，夫妻关系从冷漠到冷战到大打出手，婚姻似乎走到尽头。老年时，他们进入婚姻牢固期，文丽得了重症在生死线上徘徊；三个女儿情感婚姻都不顺利，而最爱的独子竟然英年早逝，是彼此关爱相互扶助支撑他们度过人生最黑暗岁月，最终牵手走进金婚。
