1942年，中缅边境有座叫禅达的小镇。时不时受到炮火袭击的地方，聚集着一群来自五湖四海的溃兵。他们是小少爷孟凡了（张译 饰）、军医郝兽医（罗京民 饰）、东北佬迷龙（张国强 饰）、阿译长官（王往 饰）、湖南人不辣（王大治 饰）等。他们只求有吃的死不了，如同活死尸。这时，师长虞啸卿（邢佳栋 饰）出现了，他想利用这群散兵重组川军团，空降缅甸参加战争。但到达战场的小分队面对的却是已成定局的溃败。最后剩下的孟烦了一行人被逼退到四面楚歌的小屋里。外面是不断靠近的日本兵，危机的最高点，拯救他们的是自称团长的龙文章（段奕宏 饰）。 龙文章其人，由来不明，不按常理出牌，却奇迹地带领着孟烦了一行人渡过怒江，回到了禅达。等待他们的不是嘉奖，而是看守。而龙文章则被发现根本不是什么团长，而是摘了军衔自己挂帅的中尉。就在大家都猜测龙文章凶多吉少时，龙文章不仅没死还被虞啸卿任命为川军团团长，但等待他们的是更深的漩涡……
