本案时间跨度较大，能让人感受到年代的过度，从查尔斯那一代开始，到儿子，孙女；从迪肯从管家身份到逃犯，到伪装的士兵，另结姻缘，谋划进一步的计划；玛丽也由管家妻子，到逃犯妻子再重新与别人结婚。当绿宝石盗窃案暂时告一段落之时，案件并未查清，赃物与犯人不知所踪。而再一次将此事提起之时，是爵爷和邦特被困在一个小地方，而此时第二集以钟声开启，新的故事开始了，但线索仍是那让人付出代价的绿宝石。本案中重点的关注对象当然是那“九曲丧钟”了。钟这一义项向来都没有什么好的征兆，此案中它便延续了它的使命，甚至是有人因它丧命。暂且不说此人是否应受此罪，“钟”这个物件在发挥自身的实际功用的同时，确实造成了极为凶险的后果。而由它所布的谜团更是贯穿破案的全过程。
