故事描述一名美国平凡男子Mark Hogancamp，在纽约的一家酒吧遭人暴力袭击，导致严重脑损伤，身体的协调性变差，心理也蒙上了阴影。为了自救，Mark在其后院修建了一个1：6大小的二战时期风格的小镇“马尔文科”，用兵人玩偶充当幻想中的战争时期小镇居民和士兵，迷醉于幻想的战争世界中。通过布置小镇、虚构故事情节和为兵人拍照，他逐渐恢复了健康，心理阴影也逐渐散去。
