Författaren Richard Russo har skrivit manus till denna miniserie som bygger på hans Pulitzerbelönade roman EMPIRE FALLS. Med en stor portion humor skildrar han den bittra verklighet som är vardag i arbetarnas USA. Den godhjärtade restaurangchefen Miles Roby kämpar varje dag för att få verksamheten på grillhaket att gå runt, medan den förmögna och mäktiga Mrs. Whiting gör livet surt för honom. Som om det inte räckte med Mrs. Whiting, är Miles också tvungen att hålla ett öga på sin far, Max, som alltid hamnar i knipa. Men Miles har någonting mycket värre än några restaurangkvitton och en ilsken pappa att tänka på. Han kan inte skaka av sig spökena från det tragiska förflutna som för alltid förenar honom med Empire Falls.
