Salvo Montalbano je vodja policijskega okrožja Vigata na Siciliji. Je odgovoren in resen pri delu, hkrati pa odprt in prijazen do ljudi, ki jim zaupa. Na svojem območju preiskuje številna kazniva dejanja, ki mu jih vedno – po zaslugi izjemne inteligence in ob pomoči številnih asistentov, tudi zunaj policije – uspe natančno rekonstruirati in rešiti. Med njegovimi sodelavci so namestnik Mimi Augello, inšpektor Giuseppe Fazio, nerodni policist Agatino Catarella in drugi policisti na postaji.
