Super Friends werd voor het eerst uitgezonden op ABC op 8 september 1973, met bekende DC-personages Superman, Batman en Robin, Wonder Woman en Aquaman als onderdeel van de tekenfilmserie op zaterdagochtend. Het werd geproduceerd door Hanna-Barbera en was gebaseerd op de Justice League of America (JLA) en bijbehorende stripfiguren uitgegeven door DC Comics. De naam van het programma (en de JLA-leden die bij de Super Friends te zien zijn) zijn op verschillende momenten in de uitzendgeschiedenis op verschillende manieren weergegeven (bijvoorbeeld als Super Friends en Challenge of the Super Friends).
