Choephel, geboren in 1903, heeft een onuitwisbare stempel gedrukt op de Tibetaanse cultuur en werd vandaag de dag een icoon voor jonge Tibetanen. Vanwege zijn politieke opvattingen werd hij vervolgd door de Tibetaanse regering en stierf hij in 1951 als een gebroken man. De film treedt in de voetsporen van de rebellenmonnik wiens intellect de eeuwenoude tradities van het oude Tibet uitdaagde. Reizend door Tibet en India geeft ‘Angry Monk’ een levendig beeld van Tibet dat in verfrissend contrast staat met het vaak geïdealiseerde en esoterische beeld ervan.
