永井豪が70年代後半に発表した伝奇SFコミックをOVA化。当初は全3巻の予定だったが、最終的には完結編の全4巻まで刊行されている。 平安時代。京に近い大江山では戦鬼と青鬼の二匹が宇宙や時空を行き来しながら死闘を展開。やがてその戦いは現代におよび、赤子をくわえた戦鬼は青鬼を倒す。これと同時に戦鬼はそこにいた青年・柴竜一郎とその恋人の京子へ赤子をあずけ、15年後の再来を約束して消える。赤子に手天童子郎と名づけて本当の子供同然に愛する柴夫妻だが、15年後に高校生となった子郎は自分の身体の異変を次第に悟る。そんな彼の前についに敵の憑鬼が出現。憑鬼は美少女の白鳥美雪を利用して子郎を狙うが。 本作の実制作はスタジオ・シグナルが担当。作画監督のひとりであるアニメーターの本橋秀之は原作者の意向もあって選ばれた人材だった。
