柘榴坂の仇討
彦根藩の下級武士、志村は剣の腕を見込まれ、主君・井伊直弼の警護を務める近習役に取り立てられた。部下たちにも心のこもった言葉を掛ける井伊の人間性に魅了された志村は命を懸けて井伊を守ろうと心に決める。安政7年（1860年）3月3日、季節外れの雪の中、江戸城桜田門に向かう井伊家の行列を18名の暗殺者が襲う。井伊が命を奪われたことの責任を問われた志村は、藩から逃亡した水戸浪士の首を取るよう命令される。
