Giuseppe, appartenente alla dinastia di Davide, è un giovane falegname trentenne impegnato a lavorare alla porta del tempio di Gerusalemme. In città e nel regno la situazione politica è molto tesa: il re Erode viene considerato un tiranno e i suoi figli - Antipatro, Aristobulo e Alessandro, nati da madri diverse - sono in continua lotta tra loro per il trono; nel frattempo gli zeloti, estremisti religiosi, cercano con ogni mezzo violento di liberarsi della sciagurata dinastia. Ed è proprio presso il tempio che Giuseppe, a cinque anni dalla sua partenza da Nazareth, incontra Gioacchino e Anna, accompagnati dalla giovanissima figlia Maria.
