Joanna egy connecticuti kisvárosba, Stepfordba költözik a családjával. Egy idő után a fiatalasszonynak feltűnik, hogy valami nincs rendben a helyi nőkkel. Egyfelől az asszonyok boldogan végzik a házimunkájukat, mindenben a férjük kegyét lesik, másfelől unalmas nőszemélyek, akiknek nincs egy önálló gondolatuk. Joanna és új barátnője, Bobbie megpróbál utánajárni a dolgoknak. Amikor azonban Bobbie is megváltozik, Joanna rájön, hogy a városka férfiai összeesküdtek a férfisoviniszta tudósokkal, és az asszonyaikat szolgálatkész androidokkal helyettesítették.
