Δύο μεσήλικες ραντζέρηδες, ο Γκας και ο Γκούντροου, κουρασμένοι από μια ζωή σκληρής δουλειάς, έχουν αράξει μόνιμα στο ήσυχο χωριουδάκι Lonesome Dove. Τώρα δεν έχουν άλλες φιλοδοξίες, παρά μόνο ίσως μια ακόμα μεγάλη τελευταία περιπέτεια, για να ξανανιώσουν. Και η ευκαιρία δίνεται, όταν ένας παλιός συνεργάτης τους τους προτείνει να μεταφέρουν τα ζώα τους 2.500 μίλια μακριά, στην παρθένα γη της Μοντάνα και να στήσουν ένα ράντζο εκεί. Η πρόκληση ενθουσιάζει τους δύο καουμπόηδες, που ξεκινούν μια δύσκολη και επικίνδυνη πορεία στην καρδιά της Αμερικανικής Δύσης. Στο δρόμο θα συναντήσουν ληστές, ιερόδουλες, ινδιάνους, δηλητηριασμένα νερά, αμμοθύελλες, απατεώνες και πολλά άλλα…
