Die recht übergewichtige, aber sehr lebenslustige Teenagerin Tracy Turnblad ist ein unheimlicher Fan der Corny Collins Tanzshow und kann jeden Schritt perfekt nach tanzen. Und eines Taes gelingt es ihr tatsächlich eine Rolle in der Show zu ergattern. Tracy wird zu einer der Favoritinen die Miss Teenager Hairspray zu werden. Die Abschaffung des "Neger-Tages" bei der täglichen Sendung von Corny Collins sorgt für großen Aufruhr und entwickelt sich zu einem politischen Akt gegen die Diskriminierung der afroamerikanischen Bevölkerung. Trotz widrigster Umstände schafft es Tracy schließlich live aufzutreten. Die Misswahl gewinnt Tracy nicht, aber sie ist die moralische Siegerin.
