Davey Gillen og Gerry Campbell sidder begge bag tremmer i Maze-fængslet i Nordirland i starten af 1980'erne. De er IRA-sympatisører og får regelmæssigt tæv af fangevogterne. Samtidig kæmper de for at få IRA anerkendt som politisk organisation, så de kan blive anerkendt som politiske fanger. Deres kamp fører ikke rigtig nogen vegne. En dag beslutter en anden IRA-fange, Bobby Sands, at tage nye metoder i brug. Han starter en sultestrejke.
